The Vanishing
Spoorloos (The Vanishing) - 1988 (Netherlands)
The Vanishing might be the most terrifying film I have ever seen. The film contains virtually no violence and that is what I find to be most intriguing about it. There are no "scares." Instead, the film builds tension slowly following the protagonist's quest for answers. Calling the ending a twist would be an understatement. So many things come together in one soul-shattering moment as the preceding scenes take on a whole new shape. It keeps you thinking throughout and for quite some time after. If you're a fan of psychological-horror, this film is a must.
